Reviewing Guidelines

Process

  1. Articles are received by the editor and reviewed for appropriateness.
  2. Articles are sent out to three reviewers.
  3. Reviewers are asked to dedicate an appropriate amount of time to the process of giving feedback.  However, be as prompt as you can in reviewing articles, so that we can keep the process moving (3 week turn-around, please).
  4. Reviewers provide feedback and make recommendation for disposition of the article.  Reviewers will evaluate the article using the following recommendations.  Please provide rationale for your judgment:
    1. Publish as is (or with minor revisions noted)
    2. Publish with needed changes
    3. Consider publication with major reworking of the article
    4. Don’t publish
  5. In the case of needed revisions or re-writes, the editors will work with the author to ensure appropriate revisions are made prior to publication.
  6. Editors will make the final decision about the placement of the article in the journal.

Guidelines

Please review in such a way to help both the editors and authors improve the article where appropriate.  Use the Reviewer’s Report form to provide your feedback.  Consider the following areas: a) quality of writing, b) appropriately grounded in the literature, c) soundness of the logic and/or methods of the project, and d) suitability specifically for The ICCTE Journal. The ICCTE Journal seeks articles of good quality, both from a scholarly and practitioners point of view that have a clear focus on the relationship between Christian belief, teacher education and related fields.

Specific points to be considered.  Please do not treat this as a checklist, but as guides for you to consider.

Writing Style

  • Does the manuscript adhere to appropriate guidelines for a paper as presented by APA Manual of Style (6th Edition)?
  • Is the writing clear, does it avoid difficult verbiage and/or provide adequate opportunity for the reader to engage with it (definitions, explanations and examples)?
  • Do you have specific examples of how the piece might be improved in regards to its readability?
  • Is the piece engaging and interesting?

Grounding

  • Is the manuscript grounded within the context of the literature base?
  • Does the author put forth an appropriate theoretical, conceptual, historical or foundational perspective?
  • Is the problem, thesis, or essence of the piece well established and presented?

Methods

  • If a research-based piece, are the purpose, design and methods clearly presented?
  • For a research piece, are the design and methods defensible?
  • For a piece related to practice, are the methods described sufficiently that the reader understands the purpose and activities and how the methods achieve the desired effect?
  • For concept papers, are the methods of presentation and argument sound?
  • Are there unanswered questions regarding this aspect of the paper?

Suitability

  • Does the paper address a topic of interest and concern for Christians involved with the topic?
  • Is it clear that the paper is written from the perspective of a Christian scholar?
  • Are there additional questions raised by a reading of the paper that ought to be addressed by the author (e.g. “Why should a Christian scholar in this field be concerned with this paper?”)
  • Is the paper appropriately directed toward teacher, administrator and counselor education, or some related field?
